📖 About Bellmore Memorial Library

Bellmore Memorial Library traces its origins to 1948, when civic-minded residents and the local PTA organized a library in one room of an old wooden Bellmore schoolhouse, staffing it with volunteers and seeding the collection with 150 volumes borrowed from the New York State Library. The trustees named it the "Bellmore Memorial Library" to honor veterans of both World War I and World War II, deliberately seeking the support of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts. After operating in an unheated two-room apartment on Pettit and Grand Avenues, the library moved into its first purpose-built home — the current Children's wing on Clarendon and Bedford — when that 2,952-square-foot building was completed in May 1953 at a cost of $53,365. A first major addition followed in 1968, and the library today serves some 12,500 Bellmore residents through a collection of more than 72,000 volumes and a robust digital and in-person program calendar. As a member of the 54-library Nassau Library System, a Bellmore card grants borrowing rights across Nassau County and links into the shared Nassau Libraries Vega catalog at search.nassaulibraries.org.
