📖 About Long Beach Public Library

The Long Beach Public Library traces its roots to January 1925, when the Long Beach Women's Club persuaded the city to explore funding a public library; the Lions Club opened an informal free library at 137 East Park Street in August 1926, and voters formally established a tax-supported public library on January 30, 1928. The official dedication took place September 29, 1928 at 124 West Park Street, and the library moved twice more — to 26 West Park in 1935 and to 462 Park Place in 1945 — before settling into its permanent home at 111 West Park Avenue on March 5, 1956, following a 755-to-142 public referendum. A major 1997 renovation added a three-story annex housing a 200-seat auditorium, expanded Youth Services, an Art Gallery and meeting rooms; the grand re-opening was September 28, 1998. The library weathered Superstorm Sandy (October 2012), closing until March 27, 2013 while staff provided disaster relief services to the community. Today the system operates three locations — Main, Point Lookout Branch (opened April 1967), and West End Branch (opened June 1968, rebuilt after Sandy) — and is a member of the Nassau Library System.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How did the Long Beach Public Library survive Superstorm Sandy?

Sandy struck in October 2012 and forced the library to close for nearly five months. During that period, staff shifted their mission to community disaster relief — connecting residents with emergency resources — before the Main branch fully reopened on March 27, 2013. The West End Branch, which suffered damage, was later rebuilt and continues to serve the island's western neighborhood.

What is the Vinyl Listening Lounge and how does it work?

The Main Library features a dedicated Vinyl Listening Lounge where patrons can enjoy records in-house. Each month the Vinyl Collector's Club curates a themed playlist — past themes have covered decades (70s, 80s, 90s), instrumental albums and Women in Music — published on Apple Music and accompanied by The Listening Lounge Podcast. It's a free drop-in experience; contact the reference desk at (516) 432-7201 for current lounge hours.

Can I borrow a bike from the Long Beach Public Library?

Yes. The library's Borrow-a-Bike program loans two cruiser bicycles — each coming with a lock and front-and-rear lights — for up to three days at a time. The program is open to cardholders 18 and older. Reserve your timeslot at the adult reference desk on the Main branch ground floor.

Does the library's card work at other Nassau County libraries?

The Long Beach Public Library is a member of the Nassau Library System, a consortium of 54 public libraries across Nassau County, and the library's online catalog at longbeach.na5.iiivega.com lets you search holdings across member libraries. For borrowing privileges at other Nassau System members, contact your home library, as reciprocal lending policies vary.
