📖 About Great Falls Public Library
The Great Falls Public Library is the public library of the City of Great Falls and Cascade County, Montana's third-largest city on the banks of the Missouri River. Library service in Great Falls dates back to about 1890, later moving into a Carnegie building funded by a 1901 grant before the current downtown library opened at 301 2nd Avenue North in 1967. In June 2023 city voters approved a dedicated library operating levy, which let the library expand to seven-day service, add safety and social-work support, and put its $250,000 bookmobile fully on the road for homebound delivery and neighborhood stops. In February 2023 the library joined the Montana Shared Catalog's statewide Partners resource-sharing group, so a Great Falls card can place holds on materials across more than 200 member libraries. Its Montana Room holds a deep local and state history collection, and the library continues to plan a long-term building renovation identified in its master plan.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What local-history and genealogy resources does the Montana Room hold?
The Montana Room and the Great Falls Genealogy Society collection sit on the library's third floor and together form one of the largest genealogy collections in the region, with Cascade County birth records (1887–1944), original marriage certificates (1887–1967), an extensive obituary file, coroner's records (1893–1984) and city directories dating back to 1887. It's a strong starting point for tracing a Cascade County or Montana family.
Can I take a proctored exam or get documents notarized at the library?
Yes. Great Falls Public Library offers free notary service and test proctoring among its services, along with fax, copy, scan and print and wireless printing from mobile devices. Call (406) 453-0349 ahead to confirm notary and proctor availability, since these depend on staff schedules.
What are the Great Falls Public Library's hours, and is it open on weekends?
The library is open 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m.–8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. It is also open Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m.–6 p.m. Hours can change around holidays, so call (406) 453-0349 or check greatfallslibrary.org before a special trip.
What did the 2023 library levy change at the Great Falls Public Library?
In June 2023 Great Falls voters approved a dedicated library operating levy. It let the library move to seven-day service, add staff for safety and an on-site social worker to help patrons in crisis, and fully deploy its $250,000 bookmobile for homebound delivery and neighborhood stops — services it previously could only run a few hours a week.
Does a Great Falls library card work at other Montana libraries?
Yes. In February 2023 the library joined the Montana Shared Catalog's statewide Partners resource-sharing group. As a Partners member, Great Falls patrons can place holds on items owned by any partner library, tapping into a cooperative of more than 200 public, school, academic and special libraries across Montana. Your card also unlocks statewide digital services like MontanaLibrary2Go (Libby).
Does the library have a bookmobile or service for people who can't visit?
Yes. The library operates a bookmobile funded through the 2023 levy that makes neighborhood stops and delivers materials to homebound residents. It's part of the library's push to reach patrons who can't easily get to the downtown building at 301 2nd Avenue North.
