📖 About Caroline County Public Library
Caroline County Public Library has served Maryland's Eastern Shore since County Commissioners officially created it on May 23, 1961, with doors opening February 24, 1962, in a Market Street storefront. The collection of 2,000 new and 5,000 donated books was bolstered by materials arriving by railroad from Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Free Library — a fitting echo of the county's deep agricultural and rail heritage. The current building at 100 Market Street opened in 1971 and was expanded and rededicated in 1997. Today the system serves Caroline County — a rural Eastern Shore county of ten incorporated towns — through its Central Branch in Denton and satellites in Federalsburg and Greensboro. The library belongs to the Eastern Shore Regional Library consortium, giving cardholders reciprocal borrowing across eight counties and access to an e-Shore shared catalog. Notable firsts include one of the first CD-ROM library networks in the country (1986), statewide recognition for highest-performing library in a reference survey (1994), and national recognition for its Teen Zone (2011). Caroline County is also the only Maryland county to integrate school media center automation with its public library system.
