📖 About Danville Public Library

The Danville Public Library was established in 1883 by consolidating several existing book collections, and for its first two decades it operated out of rented rooms downtown. In 1904 it opened a Beaux-Arts Carnegie building at the corner of North Vermilion and Williams streets, designed by the noted library architects Patton & Miller and expanded in 1929 through a gift from Augustus Webster; that original structure, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, now houses the Vermilion County War Museum. The library moved to its current purpose-built home at 319 North Vermilion Street in November 1995, exactly 91 years after the Carnegie building first opened. Today it is a member of the Illinois Heartland Library System and shares the consortium's SHARE catalog, so a Danville card borrows across hundreds of member libraries, and it pairs a large lending collection with a second-floor teen space, meeting rooms and the Starbooks used bookstore.
