📖 About Normal Public Library
The Normal Public Library began in 1935 as a small WPA-sponsored Reading Room organized by the Community Council, with volunteer librarian Margaret Hanna and a collection of about 300 donated books; Normal voters approved tax support in 1938, and the first Board of Trustees met on April 27, 1938. After a 1971 bond issue, the library moved in 1973 to its present home at 206 West College Avenue near Uptown Normal, and a 25,700-square-foot addition was completed in 1992–1993. The main building closed in March 2024 for a comprehensive $6.5 million renovation and asbestos abatement — with services continuing at a temporary branch in the former Busey Bank across the street — and reopened to the public on July 25, 2025, followed by replacement of the building's 50-year-old mansard roof. The renovated library preserved valued architectural details such as exposed brick while adding a second-floor Tinker Studio makerspace, an expanded Children's Discovery Room, a teen area, private study rooms, a Community Room and a nursing lounge. Its collection has grown to nearly 200,000 items, and as a member of the Resource Sharing Alliance (RSA) it lets cardholders request materials from libraries across the consortium and, through Find More Illinois, from participating libraries statewide.
