📖 About Lincoln Public Library District

Lincoln, Illinois holds a unique distinction in American history: it is the only city named for Abraham Lincoln before he became president, christened on August 27, 1853 at a ceremony where Lincoln himself — then a young Springfield attorney — reportedly squeezed watermelon juice on the ground as a blessing. The city became the Logan County seat and by the early 20th century its civic leaders sought a public library. A Carnegie grant made it possible: the Lincoln Public Library District was established in 1902, making it one of the hundreds of Carnegie-funded libraries across Illinois. Today the library operates from its building at 725 Pekin Street, holding an adult nonfiction collection, fiction, large-print books, audiobooks on CD, DVDs, magazines (current and five-year backfiles), and microfilm of the Lincoln Courier newspaper. Special collections include local and genealogical resources — postcards and photographs documenting Lincoln's history on historic Route 66 (1926–1978) — available through the History section of the library's website. The library also maintains an Annex with additional community room space. A member of the Illinois Heartland Library System (SHARE consortium), Lincoln cardholders share resources with libraries across central and southern Illinois.
