📖 About Bloomington Public Library

The Bloomington Public Library grew out of the Ladies' Library Association formed in 1856 and opened to the public in 1857 in a single room on Center Street, operating on donations and membership fees until it received a legislative charter in 1867. In 1887 Mrs. Sarah B. Withers donated land at East and Washington streets, and the Withers Library opened in January 1888; it became a tax-supported free public library in 1894. The library moved to its present Olive Street building in 1977 after a successful bond campaign. Between 2022 and 2024 it completed a $25.2 million project that added 21,339 square feet of new space and renovated 55,419 square feet of existing space, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting in August 2024; new features include an Innovation Lab, two recording studios, a permanent drive-through window and 592 solar panels. The library serves the city of Bloomington and the Golden Prairie Public Library District covering five surrounding townships, and its Bookmobile — a service running since 1930 and now in its sixth vehicle — makes 48 stops every three weeks.
