Library service in Waipahu dates back to about 1952, when a library operated along Farrington Highway in this former Oahu Sugar Company plantation town. The current Waipahu Public Library, designed by Mitsunaga and Associates, opened on March 18, 1996 beside the Waipahu Civic Center. It is best known for a pair of unusual amenities: a drive-thru window — the only one at any public library on Oʻahu — and a dedicated reading room set aside for teens. As a branch of the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System, it anchors reading and community services for one of Oʻahu's most historically and culturally diverse neighborhoods.
