📖 About Hartford Public Library, Downtown Library
Hartford Public Library traces its roots to a Library Company organized in 1774 by city leaders including Jeremiah and Daniel Wadsworth — one of the oldest library traditions in the United States. After a century inside the Wadsworth Atheneum, the system moved to its purpose-built home at 500 Main Street in 1957, a 94,448-square-foot structure designed by Hartford firm Schutz and Goodwin. Voters approved over $42 million in bond funding for a sweeping expansion and renovation completed in 2007, growing the building to 145,000 square feet. In December 2022 a catastrophic pipe burst flooded the building, forcing a nearly two-year closure. A $22 million restoration funded by state, federal, and private donors brought the Downtown Library back in phases: a partial reopening in November 2024 and a full grand reopening on June 1, 2026, with entirely new spaces including HPL Studios, HPL Hall, the Business Resource Center, and a reimagined Hartford History Center. In 2002, HPL became the first Connecticut library honored with the National Award for Museum and Library Service since the award's 1994 inception.
