The Winfield Public Library traces its roots to 1961, when the Alabama Public Library Service launched a demonstration program that first brought organized public library service to Winfield and Marion County. A regional planning committee formed in 1965, and with funding championed by Congressman Tom Bevill and civic leader C.C. Seagraves, a purpose-built 11,730-square-foot facility was constructed to serve as both the local library and headquarters of the Northwest Regional Library system. The building was formally dedicated and opened on April 26, 1970. Today the library serves a county population of roughly 35,000, offering free library cards to Winfield and Marion County residents, a Community Seed Library, genealogy and local history resources, notary services, and free digital access through Libby and the Alabama Virtual Library.
