The Story of the Library in San Juan

The Biblioteca Nacional de Puerto Rico traces its origin to the Biblioteca General de Puerto Rico, created by Ley Núm. 44 of June 6, 1967. It was formally designated the National Library by Ley Núm. 188 of August 17, 2003, and is charged with acquiring and preserving Puerto Rican bibliography — works written and published on the island or abroad by Puerto Rican authors or about Puerto Rican topics. It shares the Edificio Dr. Ricardo Alegría on Avenida de la Constitución in Puerta de Tierra with the Archivo General de Puerto Rico.

The San Juan Community Library was established as a nonprofit organization in October 1987 and describes itself as the only bilingual lending library open to the public in the capital city. Operating from a former community center within the BUCAPLAA recreational park, it maintains roughly 32,000 physical bilingual titles alongside a growing digital collection.

About Public Libraries in San Juan

In San Juan, free public library access centers on the Archivo General y Biblioteca Nacional de Puerto Rico, operated by the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña in Puerta de Tierra, and on community-run libraries such as the bilingual San Juan Community Library. Both are open to the general public at no charge for reading, reference, and research; the community library also lends books to registered members. The capital's large university libraries — the Biblioteca José M. Lázaro at UPR Río Piedras, the medical-sciences library, and the Universidad Politécnica library — are academic collections that primarily serve their own students and faculty.

Puerto Rico residents can explore the Biblioteca Digital de Puerto Rico and the digital collections of the Biblioteca Nacional (Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña), which put digitized books, historical documents, photographs, and Puerto Rican bibliography online for free at coleccionesicp.pr.gov.
