📖 About Imperial Beach Library
The Imperial Beach Library is part of the San Diego County Library (SDCL) system and anchors the city's civic life at 810 Imperial Beach Boulevard. Library service in Imperial Beach dates to a city library that opened in 1958 and moved to the Imperial Beach Boulevard site in 1967; ownership passed from the city to San Diego County in 1987. The County rebuilt the branch from the ground up, demolishing the old building and opening the current single-story library on April 11, 2017. Designed by Jeff Katz Architecture and built by T.B. Penick, the new branch is roughly triple the size of its predecessor, certified LEED Gold, and produces its own power through an 88-kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic array — earning it a popular-favorite spot in the San Diego Architectural Foundation's 2017 Orchids & Onions awards. As an SDCL branch, an Imperial Beach card works across all of the county library's locations and unlocks the system's digital collection.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Imperial Beach Library a city library or part of a county system?
It is a branch of the San Diego County Library (SDCL). The city ran its own library from 1958, but San Diego County took over operation in 1987, so a single SDCL card borrows at Imperial Beach and every other county branch.
What makes the Imperial Beach Library building unusual?
The current building opened in April 2017 as a zero-net-energy, LEED Gold library. An 88-kilowatt rooftop solar array generates roughly as much power as the building uses, and the branch is about three times the size of the one it replaced on the same site.
Which night is the Imperial Beach Library open late?
Tuesday, when it stays open until 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday run 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and the branch is closed on Sunday.
