📖 About Chariton Public Library

Chariton is the county seat of Lucas County in south-central Iowa, and its public library grew from a Carnegie Corporation grant of $11,000 awarded on January 13, 1903. The Classical Revival building at 803 Braden Ave was designed by Chicago firm Patton & Miller and dedicated on October 28, 1904. Its floor plan — with the librarian's desk positioned so both main reading rooms are visible from one spot — was so practical that it was widely replicated in Carnegie libraries across the United States, earning the name the 'Chariton plan.' A substantial addition in the 1990s doubled the library's space while matching the historic facade. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 as part of the Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District, and the library continues to serve the community with extended evening hours four nights a week.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'Chariton plan' and why is this building historically significant?

The Chariton plan is the open-sight floor layout designed by Chicago architects Patton & Miller for the 1904 Carnegie building: the librarian's desk sits at a central vantage point offering an unobstructed view of both main reading rooms simultaneously. It was so efficient that the design was adopted in Carnegie libraries across the United States. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District (added 2005).

Do I need to be a Lucas County resident to get a library card?
