📖 About Carnegie-Stout Public Library

Carnegie-Stout's roots reach back to 1859, when the Young Men's Literary Association began lending books to Dubuque residents. The modern library took shape in January 1901, when Andrew Carnegie pledged $71,500 for a new building and local businessman Frank D. Stout donated the property in memory of his father Henry L. Stout. Designed by Chicago architects W. G. Williamson and John Spencer in the Beaux-Arts tradition, the building was dedicated on October 17, 1902 — constructed of Bedford stone and brick, with a grand Roman Corinthian portico that has made it one of the finest Classical buildings in Iowa. An east-wing addition followed in 1981, and the library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Today it holds more than 240,000 items and operates a cutting-edge makerspace alongside its historic reading rooms.
