Oak Park Library opened its current 5,200-square-foot building in 1969, fulfilling the wishes of a community that had relied on a popular San Diego Public Library bookmobile throughout the 1950s. The branch serves one of San Diego's most culturally and linguistically diverse neighborhoods, with a collection that reflects the community's varied backgrounds. A grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation expanded technology access at the branch, adding 12 public computers and high-speed wireless internet for patrons who need to bridge the digital divide. Oak Park is also one of a select number of SDPL branches to host a seed library, where community gardeners can borrow heirloom and open-pollinated seeds free of charge. The branch's outdoor space offers a relaxed setting for reading, and 10 on-site parking spaces supplement easy street access.
