Flatbush residents began lobbying for a branch on Cortelyou Road in 1969, and after more than a decade of advocacy the library finally opened in 1983. From its earliest years it earned distinction as one of the first New York City library branches to display books in a 'merchandising format' — facing covers outward rather than spine-out — a practice now standard across the system. The Friends of Cortelyou Library raised over $40,000 for a 2021 renovation that brought new reading tables and chairs, a dedicated teen area, and a refreshed children's space, alongside a New York State-funded replacement of main-room shelves, lighting, and flooring.
