Carroll Gardens Library is one of Brooklyn's most beloved Carnegie branch buildings, a 14,000-square-foot neoclassical structure at 396 Clinton Street that has anchored this South Brooklyn neighborhood since 1905. Its soaring barrel-vaulted ceiling and ornate original features have made it a neighborhood landmark for over a century. In 2025 the branch closed for a major two-part renovation funded by the city, state, and community: the first phase added a new teen space, HVAC, and safety systems; the second phase, managed directly by BPL, covers elevator modernization and bathroom upgrades. While renovation is underway the library continues serving Carroll Gardens residents at a bright pop-up space at 250 Baltic Street, outfitted with furnishings donated by IKEA Brooklyn. The pop-up supports book borrowing, holds pickup, and active programming including Toddler Time at nearby St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
