The Chicago Lawn Branch was dedicated on December 1, 1960, to serve the Southwest Side community of Chicago Lawn, a neighborhood that John F. Eberhart founded in 1871 and that grew rapidly from 14,000 to 47,000 residents between 1920 and 1930. The area's immigrant heritage — German, Irish, Polish, Bohemian, and Lithuanian — earned it the moniker 'the Lithuanian Gold Coast' and shaped its cultural identity for decades.
