Athens-Limestone County Public Library is the public library of Athens, Alabama, the county seat of Limestone County in the Tennessee Valley. The building at 603 S. Jefferson Street occupies the site of a Civil War earthwork — a piece of local history recalled by longtime residents who remember playing among its earthen walls. Incorporated before Alabama achieved statehood in December 1819, Athens grew from a small frontier settlement into a mid-sized city of more than 25,000; the library today reflects that community's breadth, offering a general collection of books, audiobooks, and films alongside targeted services for genealogists, job seekers, and homebound patrons. The library belongs to the Camellia Net regional consortium, giving cardholders free access to eBooks and audiobooks through Libby/OverDrive and to hundreds of databases through the Alabama Virtual Library. Governance is shared between the City of Athens and Limestone County, with a joint board of trustees meeting every other month.
