📖 About Screven County Library
The Screven County Library was established in June 1936 under the Works Progress Administration, with founding librarian Carrie White supplementing the initial WPA collection with donations from her own shelves. Within its first year the library received 300 books from Sylvania schools and 100 more from the Georgia Library Commission. In 1951, Screven and neighboring Jenkins County formally organized a two-county regional system; a philanthropic gift of $8,000 from George Lorimer in 1953 funded construction of a dedicated building, and the library moved into its current building on South Community Drive in 1989. The library is a full member of PINES, Georgia's statewide shared catalog, and offers the GRITS Book Club, Summer Reading, and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten programs. Every patron with a library card gains free access to GALILEO — Georgia's statewide database portal maintained by the University System of Georgia.
