📖 About San Pedro Branch Library

The San Pedro Branch Library opened on August 5, 1930, making it the first purpose-built branch library in San Antonio. It stands within San Pedro Springs Park, recognized as the oldest municipal park in Texas, and is the only library branch in the city built inside a public park. Designed by architects Atlee B. and Robert M. Ayres, the roughly 4,000-square-foot building shows off a Spanish-style vaulted ceiling, with two large archways historically separating the adult and children's collections. A community-funded restoration in 2007 returned the building close to its original condition. Today the branch holds around 26,000 items, including books, DVDs, music CDs, audiobooks, and periodicals for children, teens, and adults.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the San Pedro Branch located inside a park?

When it opened in 1930 it was deliberately built within San Pedro Springs Park, the oldest municipal park in Texas. It remains the only San Antonio Public Library branch set inside a public park, so a visit pairs the library with the park's historic grounds, block house, bandstand, and grotto.

Is the San Pedro Branch a historic building?

Yes. It is the first branch library built in San Antonio, dating to August 5, 1930, and was designed in Spanish architectural style by Atlee B. and Robert M. Ayres. A 2007 renovation funded through a community development block grant restored it close to its original appearance.

Can I use the internet at San Pedro even when the building is closed?

Yes. Outdoor Wi-Fi reaches the surrounding park area and is available daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., well beyond the building's open hours, so you can connect from outside when the branch itself is closed.
