The Main Library in Oakland opened in 1895 as the centerpiece of Andrew Carnegie's grand Carnegie Institute complex, a single monumental building that also housed the art and natural history museums and the Carnegie Music Hall. It was designed by the Boston-and-Pittsburgh firm Longfellow, Alden & Harlow, whose principals trained in the orbit of Henry Hobson Richardson and McKim, Mead & White. The result blends Richardsonian Romanesque weight with Beaux-Arts refinement on a scale that made it a model for the modern civic library. More than a century later it remains the research and administrative heart of the 19-location Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Its collections include deep local-history holdings such as the Pittsburgh Photographic Library, with tens of thousands of images documenting the city. As the system's central library it also serves as a reference hub for the smaller neighborhood branches across Pittsburgh.
