📖 About Woodstock Library
Woodstock Library's history in SE Portland stretches back to 1909, when the neighborhood received one of Multnomah County Library's first 15 deposit stations with a modest rotating book collection. By 1914 it had grown into a sub-branch, and by 1917 it achieved full branch status with expanded reference services and adult and children's programming. Through the 1920s and 1940s the library occupied a series of rented storefronts, then settled into a permanent 5,640-square-foot building on SE 49th Avenue in 1960. In 2000 the current 7,500-square-foot structure replaced that earlier building on the same site — earning a national honor from the American Institute of Architects and the American Library Association for its design. Most recently, in 2025, a voter-approved $387 million county bond funded a full interior refresh including new carpet, paint, seating, shelving and updated technology, and the library reopened that September. The branch serves a diverse community and offers Chinese and Spanish language collections and regular bilingual Cantonese/English storytimes.
