Midland Library opened in 1996 at 805 SE 122nd Avenue in the Mill Park neighborhood of East Portland, purpose-built as the second-largest branch in the Multnomah County Library system at approximately 25,000 square feet. Unlike many MCL branches, Midland was not a Carnegie-era building but a modern facility designed from the outset to serve the rapidly growing and ethnically diverse communities of outer East Portland. A capital bond expansion, funded by voters in 2020, added roughly 6,000 square feet to the existing building and included a gallery space, outdoor areas, electric vehicle charging stations, a teen programming space, and a lactation room. Today Midland holds materials in Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese, hosts ESL classes, sewing groups, guitar and ukulele lessons, and children's storytimes, and offers laptop lending, a sensory room with accommodation tools, and multiple community rooms seating from 2 to 70 people — making it the primary library destination for the diverse east-side neighborhoods that stretch toward Gresham.
