📖 About Main Library

The Main Library anchors the Miami-Dade Cultural Center at 101 West Flagler Street, a monumental complex designed by the firm of Johnson/Burgee under architect Philip Johnson and opened to the public in July 1985. It replaced the county's earlier central library at Bayfront Park, moving downtown into a raised plaza that it shares with HistoryMiami and a Mediterranean-style public courtyard used for events. As the system's central branch, it holds the largest collection in the network, including deep general, children's and young-adult sections. Its standout research resource is the Florida Collection, a gathering of books, documents and memorabilia devoted to the history of Miami and the state. The building's arches, tilework and open plaza make it as much a civic landmark as a place to borrow books. It remains the reference and research heart of a system serving all of Miami-Dade County.
