📖 About Jefferson Market Library
Housed in a High Victorian Gothic former courthouse designed by Frederick Clarke Withers and Calvert Vaux (built 1875–1877), voted one of the ten most beautiful buildings in America by architects in the 1880s. After the courthouse was decommissioned, community advocacy saved it from demolition and it was converted into a public library, opening in 1967. Interior spaces reuse the former civil court (Adult Reading Room), police court (Children's Room), and prisoner holding area (Reference Room); the historic firewatcher's tower remains. Programs for kids, teens, and adults; 24/7 access to e-books, databases, and digital collections; historic reading rooms in a landmark building.
