The Platte County Public Library is the main branch of a four-location public library system serving Platte County, Wyoming. The library's history stretches back to 1896, when a group of local women formed the Wheatland Library Association and assembled a book collection. Platte County took ownership in 1914, formed its own library board and established traveling libraries in outlying post offices. In 1916 the county secured a $12,500 Carnegie Corporation grant, and the permanent Carnegie building was completed in 1917. A 1965 remodeling and addition enclosed the original Carnegie structure on three sides, though the north facade of the original building remains visible. The system expanded to include branches in Guernsey, Glendo and Chugwater, making it one of Wyoming's more geographically extensive rural library systems. Today the Wheatland main branch at 904 9th Street operates four evenings a week and offers notary public service, delivery for homebound patrons, 24/7 outdoor Wi-Fi and free access to GoWYLD — the Wyoming State Library's statewide digital collection of eBooks, audiobooks, databases and more.
