📖 About Mingo County Public Library

The Mingo County Public Library is the main branch of the Mingo County Public Library System, located at 2027 State Route 65 (Helena Avenue) in Delbarton, West Virginia — the county seat of Mingo County. The library opened in 1963 in downtown Delbarton, a community whose very name honors the three children of Wall Street financier Luther Kountze, whose Thacker Coal Company built the original coal camp here in the early twentieth century. Four years after opening, the library moved to its present building and soon expanded to mobile service routes reaching Matewan and Gilbert. Today the system operates three branch libraries in Matewan, Gilbert and Kermit, serving a combined population of nearly 24,000. Mingo County is the youngest county in West Virginia (formed 1895) and home to the legendary Battle of Matewan (1920), a flashpoint of the Mine Wars. The library is part of the Western Counties Regional Library System and uses the SirsiDynix Symphony catalog, giving patrons online access to the county-wide collection along with Hoopla and West Virginia Reads for digital borrowing.
