Oregon's first library opened in November 1910, when the Village Board levied $200 for its support and appointed a seven-member Library Board — though the community's reading tradition actually began in 1898, when 35 families paid $3 a month to share a traveling subscription library housed above C.C. Peast's Drug Store. For more than a century the library grew alongside the village, outgrowing successive spaces before embarking on a major capital campaign for a purpose-built facility. The new 31,257-square-foot building at 200 N. Alpine Parkway opened January 4, 2024, recognized by Dane County as a 2023 Climate Champion for its sustainable design: 129 rooftop solar panels and a geothermal bore field paired with electric heat pumps heat and cool the building year-round. Designed to connect physically and visually with the Alpine Parkway park setting, the building offers nine reservable study rooms, two meeting rooms, a drive-through service window for hold pickups on the north side, and a nursing room. The library is a member of the South Central Library System (SCLS), providing Dane County residents access to a shared catalog, reciprocal borrowing, and the full suite of Wisconsin's digital resources through BadgerLink.
