Whitmore Library is a branch of Salt Lake County Library (The County Library), serving the Cottonwood Heights community in the foothills of the Wasatch Front. The branch takes its name from 'Rich' Whitmore, president of the neighboring Whitmore Oxygen Company, who donated the land on Fort Union Boulevard for the project. When the library opened in 1974 it featured a United Press teletype machine, a lending collection of music audio cassettes, and a stage downstairs for recitals — state-of-the-art amenities for the era. Today the fully modernized branch offers extended evening hours (open until 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday), digital research databases, Libby e-materials, and the full suite of Salt Lake County Library programs for all ages. It consistently ranks among the highest-circulating branches in the county system.
