📖 About Val Verde County Library
Del Rio, the county seat of Val Verde County on the U.S.-Mexico border across from Ciudad Acuna, is one of the most geographically remote county seats in Texas — more than 150 miles from San Antonio and nearly 170 miles from Laredo. The Val Verde County Library at 300 Spring Street is the primary public library for this border city of about 35,000, whose population is approximately 84 percent Hispanic or Latino and whose history traces to a settlement established in 1862 along San Felipe Creek. The library is open six days a week including late evenings Monday through Thursday, giving working residents and students after-school access to the stacks, public computers, Wi-Fi and a full suite of TexShare electronic databases — the Texas State Library and Archives Commission's statewide program that puts authoritative, ad-free research tools in the hands of every cardholder. Del Rio is also home to Val Verde Winery, established in 1883 as the oldest continuously operating winery in Texas, a reminder of the region's deep agricultural and cultural roots that the library's collections help document and preserve.
