Built with $8 million in 2017 bond funds and opened February 2, 2021, the Vickery Park Branch Library was purpose-designed to serve Vickery Meadow, a densely populated Northeast Dallas neighborhood where close to half of residents speak a language other than English at home and many are immigrants or refugees from countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The 18,000-square-foot building, designed by DSGN Associates with Oglesby Greene Architecture and constructed by Turner Construction, harkens back to classical library form — a soaring main reading hall with a perimeter mezzanine — while meeting 21st-century sustainability standards that earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2022. The word "welcome" is etched into the entry glass in ten languages — Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Chin, English, French, Nepali, Spanish, Swahili, and Tigrinya — reflecting the neighborhood it serves. A $752,454 grant from the Crystal Charity Ball funded the youth center, equipping it with STEM kits, gaming systems, coding courses, and technology often unavailable at home or school. Rooftop solar panels supply 33 percent of the building's power, a stormwater retention pond manages runoff, and 90 Wi-Fi hotspots are available for checkout alongside a seed library with access to a pollinator garden.
