📖 About Lakewood Branch Library

The Lakewood Branch is one of Dallas Public Library's oldest neighborhood outposts, tracing its roots to 1938 when it first opened in the Diener-Mills building at 6342 La Vista in the Lakewood Shopping Center, where the children's area was famously carved out of a former ice cream parlor. In 1970 the branch moved into its current purpose-built home at 6121 Worth Street in the heart of Lakewood/East Dallas. Its front lawn is a small outdoor gallery: two large welded-steel sculptures by Texas artist and Texas Woman's University professor J. Brough Miller, titled 'Malthusian Concept' and 'Descending Spheres,' were purchased by developer Trammell Crow and donated to the City of Dallas, and they have anchored the grounds ever since. The branch also has deep ties to the Lakewood Art Show, a neighborhood art tradition dating back to 1962. Today it operates as a full-service branch open six days a week, closed on Sundays.
