📖 About Homewood Branch

The Homewood branch opened on March 10, 1910, the final library completed in Andrew Carnegie's original wave of Pittsburgh neighborhood branches that began after the Main Library in 1895. It was designed by Alden & Harlow, the same architectural practice behind much of the early Carnegie work in the city. For more than a century it has served the Homewood community as a neighborhood gathering place as well as a lending library, and it was even featured in an episode of the locally produced television program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. The building was recognized with a City of Pittsburgh historic designation in 2004. Today it offers the full range of branch services including public computers, Wi-Fi, meeting space, and a seasonal community garden. Its long history makes it one of the enduring original Carnegie branch buildings still operating in their first-built homes.
