📖 About Northwest Library
Northwest Portland had no public library until October 30, 2001, when Multnomah County opened the first new branch in the system since 1972 — a 5,000-square-foot space carved out of the historic Harris Wine Cellar building on NW Thurman Street. The branch quickly became one of the busiest in the city, serving an exceptionally dense residential community. Planning for a larger permanent home began after the county purchased a building at 2030 NW Pettygrove Street in 2021 using bond funds. The former Thurman Street location closed to the public on November 24, 2025, and the new library opened on January 10, 2026 — 11,000 square feet designed by Hennebery Eddy Architects, with Howard S. Wright Companies as general contractor. The $21 million project — funded by the 2020 voter-approved Multnomah County Library Capital Bond — gives Northwest Portland a library that is more than twice the size of its predecessor, county-owned rather than leased, and purpose-built with a children's play and learning space, a dedicated teen area and new community art installations.
