📖 About Fossil Public Library
Fossil Public Library was incorporated on March 6, 1916, by a small group of local trustees with just $40 in starting funds, relying on membership fees and donations to survive its early years. By 1921 the library had 21 members and recorded over 2,000 annual visitors, prompting 95 residents to petition the city council for municipal funding — approved on March 14, 1921, making it an official public institution. Librarian Maude Evans anchored the library from 1946 until 1983, serving well into her 80s. The library found a permanent home in the new city hall building constructed in 1960, where it continues to operate today. Fossil (population 447) is the county seat of Wheeler County and sits within striking distance of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument's Clarno Unit — a landscape whose prehistoric fossils inspired the town's name when postmaster Thomas B. Hoover discovered fossils on his ranch in 1876. The library is a member of the SAGE Library System, giving patrons interlibrary loan access to collections across eastern Oregon.
