Carnegie West Branch opened to the public in May 1910, replacing the original West Side branch that had operated since 1892 — Cleveland's first branch location. The building at 1900 Fulton Road was designed by New York architect Edward L. Tilton in a modified Renaissance style featuring red brick, limestone and terra-cotta, with banded and fluted Ionic columns and pilasters. Its 25,000 square feet make it Cleveland Public Library's largest branch. Andrew Carnegie pledged $250,000 in 1903 for seven Cleveland branch libraries, and when costs grew he contributed an additional $123,000 in 1907 and $110,000 in 1908, ultimately donating approximately $483,000 for the branch program. Neighbors on the West Side successfully pushed back on a proposed market-district site, and the library board sited the branch within a park. The basement once held an auditorium seating 650 and a children's room with balconies. A major renovation in 1979 reconfigured the interior while preserving the historic structure, and in 2004 interior walls were repainted to match the original 1910 colors.
