📖 About Carnegie West Branch
Carnegie West is the oldest library building still in service in the Cleveland Public Library system, opened in 1910 and financed in large part by Andrew Carnegie. It sits in the heart of the Ohio City neighborhood on Cleveland's near west side, occupying city-owned Frank Novak Park alongside neighbors such as Saint Patrick's Church and Saint Ignatius High School. At roughly 25,000 square feet it is also the system's largest branch. The building was designed by Edward Tilton, the architect behind four buildings at the U.S. Immigration Station on Ellis Island, in a modified Renaissance style with classical elements, its brick and terra cotta exterior giving a rich contrast of texture and color. Inside, the branch preserves plaster bas reliefs and a Rookwood tile mural commissioned for its 1910 opening. Completely remodeled in 1979, Carnegie West continues to draw Carnegie-library enthusiasts for its craftsmanship while serving families with an inventive, farmers-market-themed children's area.
