📖 About Hamilton Grange Library
The Hamilton Grange Library is a branch of The New York Public Library serving the Hamilton Heights and northern Harlem communities from 503 West 145th Street. The building was constructed in 1905–1906 using funds from Andrew Carnegie and designed by the celebrated firm McKim, Mead & White — one of eleven Carnegie branches in Manhattan they created for NYPL. Its name honors the neighborhood's connection to Alexander Hamilton, whose 1802 country estate, "The Grange," once stood nearby. The three-story, five-bay structure, faced in deeply rusticated gray limestone with round-arched first-floor openings and original bronze lamps and grilles, was declared a New York City Landmark in 1970 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Today the branch serves a richly diverse community with children's and teen programming, a dedicated Teen Center on the third floor, STEAM Discovery Kits available for lending, free after-school tutoring, and the ICCAN college-and-career access program for high-school students.
