📖 About Countee Cullen Library

Built in 1942 in the Art Moderne style (architect Louis Allen Abramson) to replace the smaller 135th Street Branch nearby. In September 1951 it was renamed for Harlem Renaissance poet Countee Cullen (1903-1946), becoming the first NYPL branch named in honor of an African American. Building restored in 1988. Home to the James Weldon Johnson Reference Collection for children, the African-American/Black Culture reference collection, and the Harlem Community Collection. Expanded Teen Center with tech/creative programming. Partially accessible.
