📖 About New Ipswich Library
The New Ipswich Library at 6 Main Street is a landmark in the New Ipswich Center Village Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The library traces its origins to 1793, when New Ipswich established a subscription library held in shares with three to four hundred volumes — that collection was destroyed in a fire in 1812. In the late 1880s, under the leadership of Caroline F. Barr, the women of New Ipswich organized fundraising efforts to establish a new public library. The current building was first occupied in 1895 and quickly became, in the words of a contemporary observer, "an ideal village library in appearance, management, and influence." A 1902 bequest from Mrs. Sarah Fletcher Hubbard funded the Helen Fletcher Collection — a memorial to her sister Helen. A 1903 annex was paid for by Professor James Barr Ames, and subsequent bequests from William Boynton, Samuel H. Wentworth and Henry Ames Blood (a total of over $16,000) expanded the collection over the decades. Today the library holds carefully curated materials for adults and children, a cherished shelf of books by natives and former residents of New Ipswich, and museum passes funded through community support.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How old is the New Ipswich Library and when did the current building open?
The library's origins go back to 1793, when New Ipswich residents formed a subscription library with three to four hundred volumes — one of the earliest library efforts in New Hampshire. That collection was lost in an 1812 fire. The current building at 6 Main Street was first occupied in 1895, built through the fundraising efforts of the women of New Ipswich led by Caroline F. Barr. It has stood for over 130 years and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
What is the Helen Fletcher Collection?
In 1902 Mrs. Sarah Fletcher Hubbard left the library a bequest of $4,000, specifying that $1,000 be used to purchase books in memory of her sister Helen Fletcher.
