📖 About Nashua Public Library

The Nashua Public Library was founded in 1867, drawing on the collections of the Union Athenaeum — a private reading club established in 1851 — and the Nashua Manufacturing Company's employee library. In 1903 the library moved into the Hunt Memorial Library, a Gothic Revival building designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram and funded by the Hunt family. By 1971 the library outgrew that space and relocated to its current 57,000-square-foot building at 2 Court Street, financed by local industrialist Eliot A. Carter and designed by his son John A. Carter. A Music, Art, and Media Wing opened in unfinished space in 1995, and in 2017 it was renovated into the Chandler Memorial Wing, adding seven community meeting rooms. Today Nashua Public Library holds 179,626 items, circulates nearly 730,000 items per year, and serves more than 86,000 residents. It is designated both a New Hampshire State Depository Library and a Federal Depository Library, making it a regional resource for official government publications.
