📖 About Kindred Public Library
Kindred is a small agricultural town of about 900 people in Cass County, southeastern North Dakota, roughly 25 miles south of Fargo. When a community committee surveyed 600 households in 2001, the response was overwhelming: Kindred needed a public library. By November 2002, volunteers had transformed a former clinic building — secured through the Kindred Area Rural Recovery organization — into a functioning library. On opening day, 98 percent of the collection was donated, with the remainder purchased from a book sale at the Casselton Library. Shelving came courtesy of the Pelican Rapids, Minnesota library. The city's mill levy, grants and ongoing community donations have sustained operations and funded three expansion projects. Today the Kindred Public Library at 330 Elm Street is entirely staffed by volunteers, holds contemporary bestsellers, classic literature, children's books and audiobooks, and offers digital access through Libby for ebooks and audiobooks. A Book Sale Room provides a steady stream of secondhand titles. The library partners with Ancestry for genealogy research and holds regular programs including the monthly "Breakfast with a Book" discussion, the children's "Picture This" storytime, and the "Crafting Connections" group.
