📖 About Glasgow City-County Library

The Glasgow City-County Library has served Glasgow and Valley County since 1904, when early railroad-era civic leaders — backed by the Great Northern Railway — organized the community's first library. Over more than a century it evolved from a city library into a joint city-county institution, reflecting the sprawling Hi-Line landscape where the next town can be an hour's drive away. Today it holds a circulating collection of books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and magazines, offers free public computers and Wi-Fi, and lets patrons place holds online through the Montana Shared Catalog. A free public meeting room in the lower level is available by reservation. Cardholders also unlock MontanaLibrary2Go — the statewide OverDrive consortium — and thousands of downloadable titles from anywhere. The library's "Lonely Shelf" spotlight rotates overlooked titles each month, a grassroots reader-advisory nod that keeps even long-held volumes circulating.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When was the Glasgow City-County Library founded, and why is it called a "city-county" library?

The library was established in 1904, originally as a city library supported by the Great Northern Railway and early Glasgow civic leaders. Over the decades it grew into a joint city-county institution serving both the City of Glasgow and all of Valley County — hence "city-county." This shared governance model is common in rural Montana, where one central library serves a wide geographic area.

What are the library's hours and is it open on weekends?

The library is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m.–6 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.–3 p.m. It is closed on Sunday and major holidays. Curbside pickup is available for patrons who cannot come inside.

Can I access ebooks and audiobooks with my Glasgow library card?

Yes. Glasgow cardholders have access to MontanaLibrary2Go, a statewide OverDrive consortium with more than 25,000 downloadable eBook and audiobook titles. You can borrow them through the Libby app on any smartphone, tablet or computer — no visit to the library required.

Does the library have a meeting room available to community groups?

Yes. The library's lower-level public meeting room is free to reserve for community groups and is open to the public. Reservations can be arranged through the library by calling (406) 228-2731 or contacting them via their website.
