The Marshall County Library is the headquarters branch of the Marshall County Library System, a three-branch public library serving rural north Mississippi from its home at 109 East Gholson Avenue in Holly Springs. Holly Springs itself was founded in 1836 on Chickasaw land and grew into a prosperous antebellum cotton center; by the Civil War it was a Union supply depot raided and destroyed by Confederate General Earl Van Dorn in December 1862. The town's layered past — Chickasaw heritage, antebellum prosperity, Civil War drama, the 1866 founding of Rust College, and the birthplace of civil-rights pioneer Ida B.
