📖 About Sturgis District Library
The Sturgis District Library serves Sturgis and surrounding St. Joseph County communities from its building at 255 North Street in southwestern Michigan. Library service in Sturgis dates to 1908, when city officials secured a Carnegie grant to build a dedicated public library; the Carnegie building opened in April 1909 and became a cultural centerpiece of the city known as 'The Electric City.' The current Sturgis District Library was formally established in May 2006, when the City of Sturgis together with Fawn River, Sherman, and Sturgis Townships approved a district library agreement and passed a 1.1-mil levy in August of that year. The library holds approximately 48,738 volumes and serves a population of around 18,155 residents. Distinctive features include a History Room stocked with Sturgis yearbooks, city directories, and a cemetery index, as well as a swinging-wall gallery that showcases rotating works by local artists.
