The Brandon Township Public Library was founded on June 26, 1926, when seventeen visionary women — energized by the women's suffrage movement — met in Ortonville and voted to establish a public library for their rural farming community. The library began with just 213 donated books and operated only a few hours each week, growing through community bake sales, plays, and donations to over 2,500 volumes by 1930. A key milestone came in 1933, when resident Clarence B. Crossman donated a Mill Street building, which the community's men then physically relocated across the street as a volunteer effort.
