📖 About Manistee County Library
The story of Manistee County Library begins in 1885 when a group of dedicated women formed the Lakeside Club with the express goal of establishing a public library. Their efforts gained momentum in 1902 when the club partnered with the local literary society and successfully campaigned for public library funding. With support from an Andrew Carnegie grant, architect George L. Harvey of Port Huron designed a Beaux Arts Classical building whose cornerstone was laid on August 21, 1903; the library was dedicated on April 28, 1905 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1972, the Manistee Carnegie Library merged with other county branches to form the present Manistee County Library System, which today operates six locations across the county. The main branch at 95 Maple Street serves as headquarters, offering digital lending, genealogy assistance, a talking books program for the visually impaired, study rooms, and 24/7 cloud printing.
