📖 About Kalamazoo Public Library
Kalamazoo Public Library was established in 1893 and operated first from a Romanesque Revival building designed by Ulysses Wheaton before moving to a modernist 1959 structure inspired by Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye. The current four-story Main Library at 315 South Rose Street opened in 1998 in downtown Kalamazoo. An independent district library serving approximately 120,000 residents, KPL operates five locations — Main, Oshtemo, Eastwood, Alma-Powell (at Douglass Community Centre), and Washington Square — with a staff of 90 and an annual budget of roughly $10 million. The Idea Lab, opened in 2014, lets patrons digitize photographs, home video, vinyl records, and cassettes, and produce podcasts using professional equipment. ONEplace, housed in the library, provides management training and resources to the region's nonprofit sector. KPL was named Library of the Year by Thompson-Gale and Library Journal in 2002, and received Michigan's State Librarian Citation of Excellence in 2012 for distributing 1,000 library cards to eligible first-grade students through the Kalamazoo Promise program.
