📖 About Portage Lake District Library

The library traces its roots to February 19, 1910, when the original Houghton Public Library opened in an Andrew Carnegie-funded building — a $15,000 grant that replaced a former armory on the site. The Keweenaw Historical Society was founded at the library in 1913, and the institution weathered financial crises in 1957 and 1963–1964 before community-approved tax levies kept it alive. After years of growth that strained the historic Carnegie building, a new waterfront facility was constructed on a lot where a planned Gundlach warehouse had burned in 2004. The library relocated to 58 Huron Street on June 10, 2006, placing it steps from the Portage Canal with panoramic views of the waterway. The original Carnegie building now serves as the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw. In 2018 the library assumed management of the Hancock School Public Library, and in 2020 it received the June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service from the Library of Michigan. A member of the Superiorland Library Cooperative, it serves the city of Houghton and Portage Township.

What happened to the original Carnegie library building?

The 1910 Carnegie-funded building served the community for nearly a century before the library moved to its current waterfront location in June 2006. The original structure on the former Armory site now houses the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw.

Does PLDL have a makerspace?

Yes. The PLDL Makerspace offers a Cricut machine, two button makers (2¼" and 1½"), power tools (available for checkout), and sewing machines. The room is open to current PLDL cardholders.

Can I borrow from other Michigan libraries on my PLDL card?

Yes. Through MeLCat, cardholders can request items from more than 400 libraries across Michigan and have them delivered to PLDL for pickup at no charge.

Is the Hancock library part of PLDL?

Since November 2018, PLDL has staffed and operated the Hancock School Public Library at Hancock High School, providing books, databases, interlibrary loans, and programming to Hancock-area residents.
